Peppa Pig set to appear at the new Tesco Store, Crewe

Yesterday, saw the official opening of the new Tesco store on Vernon Way. The new 64,000 square foot Tesco Extra store, which has replaced a smaller superstore, benefits from extended opening hours, a new phone shop, Tesco Direct desk and family café.

It also has an extended food and counter range including an olive bar, fresh meat and fish counter as well as larger clothing, home and electrical departments.

Opening celebrations will continue this Saturday between 11am and 4pm as the store will welcome another special guest, Peppa Pig. Peppa will be the guest of honour at a free family fun day where shoppers will be treated to complementary face painting and a barbeque.

Crewe Library Re-Opens

Cheshire East Council is reminding residents that Crewe library fully re-opens today, Monday, January 16. The library had been partially closed since November 2011 to allow for essential improvements to be made.

A reduced service has been offered during this time, with residents still able to borrow and return books.

The improvements include a larger children’s play area, new shelving and carpets and the installation of energy-efficient lighting.

The official opening of Crewe library will take place on Saturday, February 4.

Forthcoming planning application for proposed gypsy and traveller site in Crewe

Tomorrow, will see a planning application put forward to the development of a permanent gypsy and travaller site in Crewe. The proposed site is on Parkers Road. If approved, the site would house 10 pitches and an amenity block with washrooms, kitchen, dayroom and laundry.

No doubt this topic will divide opinion, but residents are urged to voice their concerns by contacting the planning office on the below.

Crewe Train Station Redevelopement

Earlier this week, Cheshire East Council’s Strategic Planning Board gave the green light to a multi-million pound project that will start the overhaul of Crewe Station and the redevelopment of the adjoining Royal Mail site. An official press release read;-

Councillors voted in favour of the application that kick-starts the first phase of an ambitious wider landmark scheme that will transform this part of Crewe. It includes:

A new surface-level car park of about 240 spaces
Improved facilities for taxis
A new area for people to pick up and drop off their family and friends
New ticket machines and passenger information displays
Reopening the pedestrian subway linking the new facility straight into platforms one to five and six to eleven
A new commercial development site to provide a business opportunity for activities, which will be ancillary to the station.

The scheme was given a boost after the Council and its partner Network Rail were successful in their bid for £6.177m from the Government’s £100m rail stations improvement fund. The announcement was made at the end of November.

Cheshire East Council and Network Rail own the land. In a bold move, the Council bought the landmark former Royal Mail site in Crewe for £2.75m. The 4.5-acre Weston Road site became vacant when Royal Mail relocated its sorting offices.

The site is seen as a prime spot for a landmark development as part of ambitious plans to redevelop Crewe Rail Station. The Council will continue to work with rail industry partners to deliver further investment to create an iconic 21st century gateway to the town.

The project is central to the Council-backed ambitious plans to regenerate and revitalise the town centre and surrounding area. This vision is called ‘All Change for Crewe’.

Councillor Jamie Macrae, Cabinet member with responsibility for prosperity, said: “This decision is excellent news and a vote of confidence in our plans to transform this historic station.

“A revitalised rail hub is critical to boosting the town’s visitor economy and its attractiveness to business.

“The scheme is a real milestone in our 20-year All Change for Crewe project. We hope it will act as a springboard to attracting further investment from Government and the rail industry to achieve Cheshire East’s ultimate ambition for the redevelopment of the station.”

Network Rail’s route managing director Jo Kaye said: “The station is used by three million people a year and it has long been recognised that there is a need for additional car parking, because more and more people are choosing to travel by train.

“The extra spaces created and the new retail outlets will bring even more people to the station for commuting, business and leisure travel – all of which will help grow the economy of Crewe. When the work is completed, passengers will have the facilities they have come to expect from a major station on one of the busiest rail routes in the country.”

It's been a while since my last update, so here's an update on new shops in Crewe

A new Frankie & Benny's restaurant has opened on the retail park - next to the fairly new TKMAXX store. I've not sampled the menu yet, but standby for a review soon. In Crewe town centre, Poundland finally opened it's doors in December.

Crewe town centre has also seen the return of the outdoor market. Speaking to some of the traders and they are determined to stay in the heart of the town centre due to the greater footfall.

Problems with your boiler - where to call for help

Before Christmas, I was having trouble with my boiler due to the freezing conditions we were experiencing. My boiler was leaking, leading to no hot water or central heating. My first thought was to call the British Gas one-off repair line, but due to the increase in demand, they were only responding to the homecall customers, so I got out the yellow pages! No-one could get out to me on that day, the best offer being the next morning.

Solution: The condensing pipe had frozen up and the water was backing up, back into the boiler, causing the leak. To fix it, they simply disconnected the pipe and dried up the water and we had heat again! If this problem has happened to you, look for the white condensing pipe going into your boiler and disconnect. You may need to put a bucket under the pipe to collect excess water. If you experience any other problems with your boiler, here are a selection of local companies that can help.

Xmas Light Switch On - Thursday 9th December

Head down to the Market Square from 4pm on Thursday to see this year's Christmas Lights switch on. The lights themselves will be switched on at 6.30pm, but there'll be plenty to keep you, and your family, entertained beforehand.

The Signal Radio Roadshow will be there to cover the event, along with performances from The Matrix Cheerleaders and Tom Seats (an up and coming local performer). There'll also be a funfair there, with an appearance with a certain fella dressed in red.

M6 accident: Junction 17 (Sandbach)

Many roads in Crewe and Sandbach were gridlocked yesterday, as an accident occurred on the M6 at junction 17 (Sandbach). A lorry driver arrested following the death of two pedestrians on the M6 in Cheshire has been released on bail.

The driver, 60, from Selby in North Yorkshire, was held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed until 17 November.

The men were killed on the northbound carriageway just after junction 17, Sandbach, on Thursday 1115 BST. Police said one was aged 69, and from St Helens. The other, aged 39, was from Ashton in Makerfield, Wigan. It is not yet known why the men were on foot on the motorway.

The northbound carriageway of the motorway was closed between junction 16, Crewe, and junction 18, Middlewich and Holmes Chapel, until 2145 BST. Police also closed the southbound carriageway for several hours after the accident.

Crewe Carnival - More updates

Darius Campbell says he is looking forward to this year’s Crewe Carnival (Saturday, August 28). The Popstar to Operastar winner is the headline act at this year’s much anticipated event. Speaking to Cheshire East Council earlier this week, Darius said: “I’m really looking forward to coming to Crewe for this year’s Carnival. I’m sure it’s going to be a great event and can’t wait to see everyone there.”

Cheshire East Council’s outdoor events team are now hard at work, putting the final touches to what is set to be a memorable day. The Carnival will be officially opened by Crewe Mayor, Councillor Jacquie Weatherill. Cheshire’s Silk 106.9 Breakfast Show presenter, Andy Bailey, will host this year’s show together with Paul Senior from CAT Radio. Tickets are now available – they are free but anyone who wants to attend the evening concert will need to get a ticket from the Lyceum Theatre, Nantwich Customer Services office or The Box in Crewe. Five tickets are available per person.

Crewe Carnival - Latest News

Local Listings has finally aquired a few details about this year's carnival on Saturday 28th August.

Due to the ongoing renovation work at Queen's Park, it will be held on the King George V playing fields again this year. In the evening, the free concert will be headlined by former Pop Idol contestast and judge on Popstar to Operastar, Darius. You can pick up the free tickets for the concert now, from Lyceum Theatre.

Business Hubs in the Cheshire area

The next Business Hub will be held in Crewe this month. The event, on Wednesday, August 11, will give local businesses the chance to come face to face with Cheshire East Council and find out how to tender for public service contracts. Officers from the Authority’s procurement team will be on hand to answer a full range of questions relating to publicly-funded business support.

It will be held at Scope House, in Crewe, from 10am. It is a free drop-in event available to small to medium-sized businesses. Representatives from Business Link, Blue Orchid, HM Revenue & Customs, Jobcentre Plus, ACAS, The Reaseheath Enterprise Delivery Hub, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and East Cheshire Chamber will also be on hand on offer advice.

For more information, to book a place at one or more of the workshops or to book an appointment with the Procurement Team (to find out about how to tender for public service contracts) – please email about the Business Hub events.

A further seven Business Hubs are to be held across Cheshire East up until March 2011.

Cheshire East Councillor Diana Thompson, Cabinet support member with responsibility for prosperity said: “The Business Hubs have proved to be popular events so far, providing advice for many businesses across Cheshire East. I would urge any local businesses in Crewe to come along to the event and see what this Authority can offer. Learning how to tender for a public service contract could prove to be a vital stepping stone for your company.

Celebrity Masterchef hits the town of Nantwich

Nantwich had a sprinkle of star dust as Celebrity Masterchef was filmed at Mill Island.
The episode to be shown next week features a selection of celebrities whose identities are being kept a closely guarded secret. Judges Gregg Wallace and John Torode, and the entire film crew were welcomed to the town during Holly Holy day and the re-enactment of the Battle of Nantwich.

The Battle took place during the English Civil war in the reign of King Charles I in 1643.
The battle was between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists and saw the Royalists defeated in 1644. In celebration, the Parliamentarians, led by Sir Thomas Fairfax, wore sprigs of Holly in their hats, which gave the event its title.

Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “Since our Love Food Hate Waste campaign, I have become increasingly interested in creating new dishes, so I look forward to the programme and getting some ideas.

Andrew Martin, Cheshire East Councillor for the Nantwich Ward said: “I’m pleased the BBC has chosen to feature Nantwich and one of our most famous historical enactments. I’ll certainly be watching.”

The episode will be on our screens on Wednesday, August 11, on BBC 1 at 8pm.
This celebration of good food is perfect for whetting our appetite in time for Nantwich Food and Drink festival, which will take place from 24 - 26 September.

Matrix Cheerleaders at Queen's Park

Visitors to Queens Park in Crewe this Sunday, June 20, will be treated to a performance by the town’s very own Matrix Dancers.

The girls-only cheerleading and dance troupe will be entertaining crowds from 2pm - 4pm.

At the recent International Dance Teachers Association competition, Matrix came top in all the cheerleading classes they entered. They also took first place in three of six stunt team categories they competed in.

Matrix has five cheerleading and dance teams with one training squad. Membership is open to girls aged five - 18 years.

Councillor Andrew Knowles, Cabinet member for health and wellbeing said: “The Matrix demonstration is just one part of a busy programme of free entertainment at Queens Park. We have already had concert bands, jazz bands, keep fit and children’s entertainers.

“There really is something for everyone to enjoy and I’m sure the Matrix demonstrations will be a big hit.”

Railwayana Auction - at the Crewe Heritage Centre

The Crewe Heritage Centre are holding a very special auction in two weeks, with a wide range of railway items on offer. The auction, on Saturday 20th March 2010, will attract many railway enthusiasts from all over the country, but it'll also be a perfect day out for the family. There'll be various stands, as well as a variety of refreshments - including home made cakes and scones.

In addition to the auction, the centre will be open as normal for the first time this year. All three signal boxes will be open and there will be a vintage bus service to and from Crewe town centre & railway stations.

I had a look through the windows of the new pound centre earlier this afternoon and the good news is that they now have stock in store. Much of it is still in boxes, but it is a clear sign that the grand opening is imminent.

Next, on the Grand Junction retail park, is now closed while the store undergoes refurbishment. It is likely to open again in mid March.

New Pound Centre Shop to be opened soon in Crewe town centre

There is a new shop opening up in Crewe town centre. It will be located between Paperbox and Shoe zone on the Queensway shopping arcade. The insides are taking shape and the store is not far from opening.

The store will be a pound centre, likely to offer the same sort of goods as you'd expect from a pound shop. It is great news for the town and the new store will make up for losing the pound shop that was near to Asda.

Crewe Outdoor Market moves to Market Square

As I'm sure you're aware by now, Crewe outdoor market has been relocated to the aptly named Market Square. This is to allow it's former site, the Lyceum Square, to undergo renovation. Details of the renovation will be posted when available.

I visited the outdoor market today in it's new location and people seem happy enough. In addition to regular customers, the stalls now have the opportunity of pulling in erm... irregulars - people who wouldn't generally visit the outdoor market.

Reindeer comes to visit Crewe Market Centre

If you were Christmas shopping in Crewe today, you may have noticed a few friendly visitors. There were 6 Caringorm reindeer who were taking part in a special parade around Crewe town centre from Midday, with a chance to meet them afterwards outside of the market centre. We are delighted to welcome back the wonderful Beechwood School Choir for a special performance from their new infant choir. The choir will be singing a mixture of traditional carols and festive songs and raising money for their chosen charity.

Wednesday 16th December - CAROL SINGING IN THE MALL 1:30pm - 2pm

Pupils from Sir William Stanier School will be returning to the Market Shopping Centre to serenade shoppers with Christmas songs and carols.

Thursday 17th December - CHRISTMAS ENTERTAINMENT 10am - 4pm
Free festive fun for our young shoppers all day. We will be having Christmas face painting and entertainment from magician and balloon modeller Russ Styler.

There haven't been too many updates from the local listings blog lately, but that's about to change! Below, are a list of improvements coming soon to your local listings network.

Forum Created. Work has begun on the Local Listings Forum, which will give users more of a 'social networking' feel. It will also allow users to receive news and updates as they happen.
Details of the Grand Junction Retail Park will be added soon, to give the shops directory a more comprehensive list.
There will be a bigger 2010 best fish and chip shop of the year competition, promoted everywhere around town!

Stop 'n' Shop - Your local mobile shop

Having moved to a new area of Crewe not too long ago, I was delighted to find out that it was on the route of a local stop 'n' shop.

They offer a wide range of snacks and confectionery, as well as bread and milk, all at very reasonable prices. Combine that with a friendly service and you can see why the stop'n'shop is a vital part of the community.

Their current hours are.

Monday to Friday: 5 - 10pm

Sunday: 3 - 8pm

This years Party in the Park is taking shape after it was announced that last year's X-Factor finalist Diana Vickers will be performing at the event. This is an addition to fellow finalist Eoghan Quigg, which will, no doubt, increase demand for the special VIP tickets for the event. They are priced at £9 and will get fans closer to the stage - as well as an opportunity to meet the stars afterwards.

The Party in the Park will be held at King George playing fields this year, due to the continued renovation work at Queen's Park.

If you are looking to go into further eductaion, the Machester Metropolitan University has a campus right here in Crewe. It offers a wide range of education from diplomas and degrees to post-graduate and professional subjects.

The facilities are some of the best around, including newly built student accomodation. It is also set on the outskirts of town, but has easy access to the rail station and town centre shops. The new tesco express on Macon Way would also come in handy.

Events - Sandbach Transport Festival

This festival will be held over the 18th and 19th April at Truck Town Sandbach. The Carnival & Steam Rally kicks off on the Saturday, whilst Sunday hosts the vintage and new vehicle parade.

Saturday's show will comprise of Bike Stunt shows, 'Circus in the park' and lots of things for children - including a Punch & Judy show and truck pull. There will be a Monkey March for under 5's, supporting the charity Caudwell Children. In addition, there will be lots of exhibitions and lots of family based activities.

Sunday's show boasts a celebrity guest, former Irish Heavyweight Boxing Champion Big Joe Egan, also a former sparring partner of Mike Tyson's. There will be the usual hog roast, art exhibition, NW Town Criers' Competition, fairground rides, charity stalls, live music, marching bands and a whole host of other fun things for a great FREE family day out.

Left at Roundabout, up Macon way.Left at 2nd Roundabout into Earle Street, over 3rd Roundabout. Turn right at 4th Roundabout, Vernon Way. Through traffic lights then Left into Market Street (between car parks). Left again then take immediate right into Meredith Street,. Oakley Building in on your left after 100 metres.

From Bus Station. 5 min walk.On leaving Bus turn left. Then right into Victoria Street. Head towards Asda. Go round Asda through car park. Over Pedestrian crossing. Meredith building in front.

By Car from M6-North and South. Approximately 6 miles.Take Junction 16 and follow signs for Crewe. When on Weston Road, over 1st Roundabout onto Macon Way. Left at 2nd Roundabout to Earle Street. Over 3rd Roundabout then right at 4th Roundabout. When on Vernon Way through traffic lights then left into Market Street. (between car parks). Left again then take immediate right into Meredith Street,. Oakley Building in on your left after 100 metres. From Nantwich. Approximately 5 miles.Take the Middlewich Road, by the Barony Park. After 3 miles right at 1st Roundabout (by Farmhouse pub) along West Street to lights at Vernon Way. Turn left then left again into Market Street. Left again take immediate right into Meredith Street.
